could be removed, however, at a light expense. There is water for four or five months of the year for boals of ordinary size lo ascend. After passing these shoals, there is no obstacle (but the leaning Limber) to the navigation till you arrive within twelve miles of Nacogdoches. I can nume as good landing-places 0 11 the Neches: McKenny's bluff, on the west, seven miles from the mouth of the river, (prairie land;) Beaumont, on the west, twenty-five miles higher up, the beginning of timber; next bluff is on the west, ten miles higher up, growth pine; Red bluff, ten miles higher up, on the east, growth pine and oak; Grant's bluff, thirty miles from Beaumont,.growth pine; high land, five and ten miles higher up, on the west, growth pine and oak; Richardson's bluff, twenty-five miles from Grant's, growth pine; ten to fifteen miles higher up, high lands, on the west, growth various; thirty-five miles from Richardson's, Yellow bluff, on the east side, growlh various; fifty miles from Richardson's, mouth of Big Cut-off, growth pine and oak, &-c.; twenty-five miles farther, Thompson's bluff, growth various; fifteen miles from Thompson's, McQueen's landing, tim- ber various; three miles from McQueen's town, bluff on the west, growth pine and oak. This is the last good landing-place below the junction. On the Angeline there is good landing at Prater's, on the west, and Zavala, on the east; mouth of the Atoyeue, Percet's landing on the west, at at mouth of the Lanaud. Of the Sabine 1 know but little; some of my ne-ighbors have very lately come up as far as Big Cow creek, (25 miles from this place,) and report the river in excellent navigable order. A short distance above this there is a small raft; but whether il is of a nature to present any serious obstruction, I know not. With sentiments of the highest consideration, I have the honor to be, honored sir, your very obedient servant, S. H. Everett To His Excellency Major General E. P. Gaines.
