Honored and Respected Sir: You will please pardon my not having wrillen to you before this time, as circumstances con- necled with the disorganized slate of this cou11Lry has prevented me from procuring as correct or as extensive information as I would desire to lay before you. The Neches, during eight months of the year, (viz: from the middle of October to the middle of June,) is from ten lo twenty-five feet above low-waler mark; the current is gentle anci equal, the power of two men being capable of prepelling a keel of 15 tons against il. The width of the channel varies from 60 lo 100 yards. 1 am but little acquainted with steam- boat navigation; but the opinion of lhose acquainted with the river, and well acquainted with steamboat navigation, is, that it may be navigated as far as the junction of the Neches and Angeline for eight months of the year, without any other obstniction than a few snags and some leaning timber, all of which might be removed at a comparatively trifling expense. With regard to the Neches and Angeline above their junction, neither of them can be navigated very far above their confluence wilh lhe same facilities that the Neches can be. A short distance above the junction of the Neches and Angeline there is a range of high, hilly lands, that commence near Hickman's ferry, on the Sabine, and ru1111i11g westwurdly cross the Angeline and Neches; and below Zavala these highlands seem lo have formed, or to have been the cause of the f urmi11g, shoals i11 the Angeline and Neches rivers above their junction.
