physical and moral difference. I have issued a proclamation calling upon the citizens Lo turn out en masse. So far as we have heard, they have responded lo the call with a good zeal. Our army will fall back lo the Colorado, and there will commence the tug of war. The late Secretary of \Var, Mirabeau B. Lamar, is appointed major-general, and will command the forces. He is an honorable and chivaJrous man, and I doul>l nol he will do honor to himself and good service to Texas. His views on some subjects, and on one especially, have been very different from mine, but I do not the less respect his noble qualities. Santa Anna is at Columbia, in the custody of an officer deputed by the army. I am more and more convinced that, if our treaty has done no good, it would have done no harm; but I am further persuaded that it would have resulted in great good to Texas could it have been carried inlo effect. The strong appeal to Mexicans now is in behalf of the captive president. But l have not time Lo discuss this matter now. My impression is, that our contest here will be renewed in about one month, and will continue until the controversy will be decided. Now, then, is the day, and now is the hour, when every Texan and every friend to Texas should gird on his sword and rush to the field. Hasten, then, to raise·your forces, and come to the rescue. Let us hear from you orten and minutely. In haste,

Your friend and servant David G. Burnet

The late news from Matamoras has induced me to advise Le Ray to return immediately lo you for orders, as I have no doubt but that you will want his services. The report of there being 10,000 men collecting to invade Texas a second time, is, of course, a great exaggeration, but they will certainly make an effort which \\~II require atlention:-you will not be i<lle:-Toby and myself will, i11 some way or other, forward supplies and all the Volunteers who
