To His Excellency David C Burnet President of Texas
I have taken the lil,erty to address these few lines to you in behalf of a poor Woman who has had her Husband killed in the late Texian War in which hy all the information I can gain he served as a brave soldier in defending the rights of Tcxians His Widow understands from accidental communications from one who was acquainted with her late husband saw him in the field of action and was requested by him in his expiring moments to inform his Wife that there would be frotn three to four thousand acres of Land for her on her application The mans name was WiUiam Hearsey an<l I understand met his fate in the Victorious Battle of the Tcxians or what was called the storming of the A Imo he was promoted to a Lieutenant in the army. His Wife has at present a very scanty means of subsislance with four small children and if any thing could be done with respect to relief or comfort it would be a great consolation and an act of the highest benevolence.- Believing your goodness would cause enquiries lo be made from the stations of the Army in Texas I have been induced to make this request of you for the satisfaction of the poor agitated Woman-who has lost a good Husband If you would cause a line of intelligence to be sent with respect to the Land and the nature of it which I understand to be the price of his field duties would be an unspeakable kindness to the unfortunate & should consider it confcring the highest obligation upon.- Yr Most Humble & Obed Servt Samuel B Hammond P.S.
