due our Company that a larger amount than the mere premium lands should he given to us for surrendering our contracts. The Government we think is bound to respect the rights of the persons holding the several grants, & that in justice to us, they ought to authorize our locating for the benefit of the Company 500000 acres of land, 300000 of which in Mr Zavalas Grant, & 100,000 in Mr Burnets Grant & 100,000 in the Grants to Mr Vehlein. But we are very certain they cannot give us less than our premium lands which amount to 276,000 acres, or thereabouts, & we therefore say to you that you must not consent to surrender our grants unless the whole amount of our premium lands are allowed us ,~ the deeds for which must be made out in the names of those who hold for the benefit of all parties namely Anthony Dey Win H Sumner & Geo. Curtis. We hope also the courtesy will be allowed ui5 to hold these lands in fee simple without condition that we may be allowed to dispose of the same to the best advantage for aU the parties interested. But tho!le doc, uments we sent arrived at a late hour just before the government were driven away & we are not advised what was done. We are in the hopes that we shaU persuade Mr Treat to visit Texas to promote the: interest of our concerns & if so we shall also constitute him as !Co-Attorney & agent with you lo adjust our affairs. As soon as the Government determine what shall be done in relation lo our Company if they allow us any land we shall place funds in some Bank at New Orleans al your disposal to pay all expenses & shalJ direc:t the survey & location of our land without delay." We have said thus much to you because we rely much upon your friendly aid to see that justice is done to the Company. You can do much for us.
