To His Ex the President & Hon Cabinet of the Republic of Texas Gentlemen,

On the 25th, we lo our surprise saw in our papers, a Proclamation of the President, appointing ~lessrs T. Toby & Brolher sole agents for Texas., an annuling all former Agencies. We had flattered ourselves that the zeal shewn in the public Service: Eighty Thousand Dollars of debts , conlraclcd in your cause, and the sacrifice of private creclil in the cause of Texns and civil Liberty, would have assured us lhe honour of a letter of advice from the Cabinet, naming such a chnnge, and your reasons for making it. It would have been some consolation-had you advised your new Agents-in what manner our large responsibilities, were to be met, or how we were to answer lhe clamorous demands of the friends of Texas, who in your hour of peril and clanger credited the Government, relying upon your honour as merchants and men, to protect their interest. In all the changes that have taken place, we have held up lo them, that a brave and chivalrous people, struggling in the cause of Liberty, never could forget those, who, ·in the hour of danger gave them countenance and support. Whal answer shaU we give them now, when those who refused you assistance, are now lhe objects of your favor? When the Agency of Texas was desperate and hazardous: your cause doubtful, your credit uneslablished-Whcn no merchants would come lo your aid, when a Loan could not be obtained, except on terms that a Convention of your fellow citizens refused-while an army was in the heart of your.country: we accepted lhc Agency of Texas. Accepted that which T. Toby & Bro. absolutely refused as dangerous. The face of arfairs, is now changed! there is some honour and profit in the office, and those who have served you to the
