Jasper, (Texas,) June 27, 1836. Honored and respected Sir: From the many reports which have reached you, all tending lo contradict each other, and believing you would be glad to have true statements of the cause of the recent panic prevailing in this part of Texas, I take the liberty of sending to you a statement of such things as have come within my own observation. In October last, the citizens of Texas called a consultation lo consult for the best interests of the country. The members had powers given them lo do such things as they might deem of service to the country. That consultation (of which I was a member) granted conditionally to the Cherokee Indians, a certain tract of country lying between the Neches and Angeline rivers, and north of the Labradie road. On the tract of land thus granted there were many families residing, most of whom became dissatisfied with the granting of lands situated as they were to the Indians. The Indians had expected a much larger tract of ]and than was granted; became dissatisfied, also, and complained loudly of injustice done them. Thus hostile feelings were roused in the breast or the Indian in the very outset of our campaign. Santa Anna now sent commissioners among the several tribes of Indians to induce them to take up arms
