the success of our arms that I depend for a home for the ballanee of my life in Texas I name the following lo you I have seen several persons since I returned to the army from the vicinity of Nacogdoches. They inform me that the lndians on the Sabine was a great cause of the peoples not coming lo your assistance from that quarter during the last conflict with the mexicans and you may rest assured it will be the case again unless some steps arc taken lo bring them Indians lo a proper and fair uncler, stancling of matters. there is some of them no doubt that is favourable lo the mexieans and I know that they have bad & that very bad counsellors amongst them which ought lo be removed and as General Houston informed me he would be in Nacogdoches before this time I think this the most favourable opportunity that has ever offered since I came lo texas to bring those Indians into the field which if it can be effected would be of considerable advantage lo us in two ways first it would relieve the citizens in that vicinity of any fear from them and secondly if you have a faithful man lo accompany them and one that you and them can both put confidence in you would have but a faint idea of the service they would he of till you would see it tried. 1 am well acquainted with the most of them and thcrefore know who of them to put confidence in and who not, and through those who I know I can place confidence in it would be an easy matter lo find out Lhc deceitful ones, hut as they now stand situated, if there was lo come a large force against us and the citizens of texas was lo be struck with the same panic they were taken with last spring it is prohable & in my opinion almost certain they then would nol offer any assistance lo us but if they could be gol into the field previous lo that they would never retreat Should you wish to consult those people and engage them in our interest ( feel ready & willing Lo accompany any gentleman in whom you can place cunfidcnce in Lo those towns and use all the i11fluence I lrnv<> with them to bring them Lo a proper sense of their situation and bring as many of them oul as I can provided you think 1 could go there and return before we will all be wanting in the field again as I did not have the honor of being in the last battle I feel anxious to be on the next provided we have another to fight il is through no motives of self interest that 1 have named this to you tho it has been said by some of Gen Houstons enemies that 1 was anxious to bring an Indian force into the field through spccuh1tive views this I
