The Genl

has received with some astonishment a communication signed by a number of individuals belonging to the Regulars Jt is tTue they have not been paid it is also true that they have had much toil and hardship to encounter This was to have been expected the very same Soldier carried with it the associate Ideas of toil Suffering and danger I would say to these petitioners that upon a proper discharge of their duties depends their pay their Lands- Nay more the existence of Texas as a distinct nation Men who have already acquired immortality in ballling with a Tyrant and his Mexicans cannot now prove wanting to duty. The petitioners must be under no apprehensions as to their pay and allowance of Lands. The Laws of Country fix that and publick opinion backed by the patient discharge of their duties will always guarrante to them their rights

[G. C. Russell, Alexandria, to Sam Houston, June 25, 1836, reporting that "on last Tuesday news reached N. Orleans that -the authorities of Mexico are preparing to invade Texas with 15,000 men, that they have succeeded in raising 600,000$ for con- tingencies ... & that a Tampico paper threatens to invade N. Orleans and lo plant their standard on our Capitol. Do make haste and be on yr. feet and give them employment-else old Jackson is lost. .. .''] ·
