Dear Gent

Your Communication under date of Lhe 7th June with its enclosure reached me some days ago and would have been earlier answered but for the fact that I could not procure a suitable conveyance earlier previous to the reception of your letter or in facl the information of your arrival I had dispatched one hundred and eighty mounted men by way of S;111 Antonio with directions lo proceed Lo Bastrop on Lhr. Colorado for the purpose of protecting the inhabitants from the Indians 1 had previously sent a Company of Sixty men from my Encampment on the Brasos lo that section of the Country for the same purpose I would detach another Company of mounted men but for the fact that 1 have not that number sufficiently mounted to make the Campaign What few horsemen 1 have are on Broken clown horses and I have not really a sufficient force of Cavalry to prevent lhe driving off Callie upon this frontier l apprehend you will find much difficulty in marching through the CounlTy with Infantry the march will be long and through a Country pretty much Stripped of provisions J would suggest to you the propriety of requesting of the Secretary of War a draft from Washington and that section of mounted men sufficient to increase your force of Cavalry lo a sufficient amount for objects of the Campaign the Indians arc constantly in motion and could not without an accident he overtaken with Infantry and Common horsemen are decidedly the best for the purpose l have immediately on the reception of your Communication sent orders lo Col Smith who commands the l80 Cavc1lry which I had sent by S1111 Antonio to join you in the neighborhood of Bastrop al which place you will also find Captain Billingsly Enclosed you have an order lo him to join you- 1 would have liked much lo huve seen you Lo Lt'.ncl er lo
