decided to allow him as many as thirty-three, permitting him to use his discretion in making longer or shorter stops than those indicated.u As ordered by the viceroy, the ten original families and the five recently married couples, making a total of fifteen, with fifty-six per- sons, started out from Cuatitlan on November 15, 1730, under the care of Francisco Duval, who took charge of all the arrangements for the journey to Saltillo. The five new families were Francisco Arocha and his wife, Juana Curbelo; Vicente Alvarez Travieso and his wife, Maria Curbelo; Antonio Rodriguez and his wife, Josefa de Nis; Jose Leal and his wife, Ana Santos; and Juan Delgado and his wife, Catarina Leal.., The rest of the settlers have already been listed. While the brave little band traveled to Saltillo, the viceroy gave instructions as to their reception, the continuation of their journey to the San Antonio, and their final settlement. On November 28, he issued detailed instructions to Captain Mathias Aguirre, at Saltillo, stating what he should do in preparation for the arrival of the fifteen families. He informed him that it had been decided that as soon ·as ten soldiers from the Presidio of Coahuila at Monclova arrived in Saltillo as ordered, to escort the settlers, they should be ready to start for the Presidio of San Antonio de Bexar. Still under the guidance of Francisco Duval, the official conductor, they should proceed, as soon as practicable,-to their final destination along the following route: from Saltillo they were directed to go to the Hacienda de Santa Maria and to continue from there, traveling from day to day to Hacienda de las Mesillas, el Despo- blado de Anelo, Espinazo de Ambrosio, La Hoya, Charco Redondo, Castano, Presidio de Coahuila (Monclova). Here they should rest for three days. Resuming their march, they should continue to Las Adjuntas, Alamo Viejo, Rio de Salinas, Arroyo de Calzones, Ojo de San Diego, and the Presidio de San Juan Bautista. The Captain of this presidio would be responsible for the escort that was ordered to accompany the travelers to San Antonio de Bejar. After two days' rest at this post, they should be escorted by the captain in person as far as the Rio Grande. He should also see that they encountered no difficulty in crossing the stream.
