with three soldiers for guard duty; eighthly, that since Captain Felipe de Rabago y Teran had been paid by the royal treasury six thousand ,pesos for the construction of a presidio at San Xavier, which had never been built, he or his bondsman in Mexico should be ordered to return the unspent balance to be applied to the construction of the new presidio at San Saba. 77 Faced with numerous problems, the new viceroy took no action until May 18, 1756, when he finally issued a decree embodying the chief recommendations made by the Junta. He ordered Colonel Diego Ortiz Parrilla, appointed on the previous day to succeed Don Pedro, to remove the remaining neophytes of the suppressed missions of San Xavier to San Antonio. Upon the accomplishment of this commission he was to leave immediately for San Saba, where he was to take along the garrison of fifty men, with twenty-two from San Antonio and twenty-seven new recruits. He was likewise to transfer all the property of the three missions formerly established on the San Xavier. He was to build a presidio at San Saba and reestablish the same number of missions as on the former site. The missionaries of the suppressed missions were to take charge of the conversion of the Apaches. He was cautioned particularly to exercise the greatest care in the enlistment of the new recruits, selecting men of good moral character and experience. Of the twenty men left in San Antonio he was to inform Captain Urrutia that three should be assigned to each of the five missions. The officers of the new garrison of one hundred men were to be a captain, two lieutenants, two alfereces, four sergeants, and a corporal. The rate of pay was to be the same as that allowed to the original garrison at San Xavier. The six thousand ,pesos authorized for the construction of the latter were to be applied to the new presidio. Finally, since the jurisdiction within which the new site on the San Saba lay was undetermined, the commander of the new presidio was to be subject directly to the viceroy until the question was settled. Colonel Ortiz Parrilla was duly informed of the instructions on May 24, when copies were also sent to Captain Urrutia and the mis- sionaries.78 The new commander. A day before the formal decree just cited was issued, the viceroy had appointed Colonel Diego Ortiz Parrilla to succeed 77Junta de Guerra y Hacienda, February 27, 1756. A.G. I.
