was too close to San Juan Bautista, being hardly twenty-four leagues away. But in view of all the facts presented, he concluded by recom- mending that the new Presidio del Sacramento be erected on the San Diego River as proposed with the understanding that this location was not to be permanent. If experience proved that it should be moved to a more advantageous position to protect both Coahuila and Nueva Vizcaya, no objection should be ·made to the removal. The garrison should consist of fifty men, whose annual salary should be four hundred pesos. The captain should receive six hundred pesos a year and should be authorized to distribute lands to settlers. He should be held responsible for the erection of a chapel. A chaplain should be provided by the viceroy, whose stipend should be paid out of the royal treasury, in order that the garrison, their families, and such settlers as established themselves there might enjoy the comforts of religion without cost. 9 The recommendations were approved by the viceroy on December 22, and the corresponding orders were issued two days later. It was clearly stated that the location was not permanent. The new presidio was to be subject to the jurisdiction of the Governor of Coahuila and was to be erected immediately at such a place as was deemed best to check the incursions of hostile Indians into Coahuila and Nueva Vizcaya. Captain Miguel de la Garza Falcon, previously appointed captain for life, was still in Mexico awaiting final action. He no sooner learned of the approval of the plan than he presented a petition to the viceroy that same day for the advanced pay of himself and garrison, amounting to twenty-six thousand six hundred and sixty-five pesos, and in addition the sum of six thousand pesos generally allowed for the erection of new presidios. The request was granted and Captain Miguel departed to carry out the orders without delay. 10 Progress of Sacramento Presidio to I768. In course of time the viceroy reported the establishment of the new presidio to the king and asked his royal approval. The Council of the Indies recommended, on July 27, 1740, that the king approve the erection as useful and necessary and His Majesty finally gave his royal consent on March 23, 1741. 11 ~an Rebolledo to the Viceroy, July 21, 1736. /b;d., 143- 163. l0Viceregal decree for the erection of Presidio del Sacramento.
