of perfidious, Eve droppers who wished to secure themselves in hls Favour by seeming to espouse his Interest by Representing Falsely the Disposition and Acts of the Council conceived that the whole or greater part were united in Disrespect, and a determination to Render contemptible his Depa[rtrn€nt] in this he was Deceaved as I am sensible that the charges he made were·entirely unfounded and only 2 members of the Council personly disliked the Governer and were disposed to Extend every Courtesy to his Defects and Honour him as the head of our Provisional Government. an assidions attemp was made for 2 days (while all was still kept a secret from the p[eople7) to Reconcile the difficulty and not to publish to the world the Defect of our Governrn [ent] already too weak to sustain the necesss[ities] of the Country But bis usual stubbourncss prevailed and the Coun- try must suffer by the Passions of an Individual and the Council was compelled to publish to Texas their own Justification as a Body though I confess I believe there was a few very corrupt membel·s, in That Body. since the Dissolution of that Body I believe you are familiar with the affairs, of Texas, and I must beg you to excuse this hasty detail drawn up in haste Just as I am about to Leave and I fear you will scarcely make out to Read it. I am sony time docs not permit me to return to the office of secretary of state where all the Records and Correspondence are Filed.
