informed b~· the Gentleman in whose charge I placed the letter that he has lost it and as this Sehr. is on the eve of departure for Orleans I have to make you up a ha ty ketch of that which I had more fully writteh out . His Excellencv the President and the Honbl. the members of the Cabinet, after ~Y application, unanimously confered upon me the appcintment of Ma,ior Gen 'I of the army to comand a divi ion here- after to be rai ed &c-subject to the anction of the next congre s; and hould the question ccme up please a k of your friend Gen 'l Ru k and :i\Ir omervill, Seer. of War, to attend to it for me. I declined any effort whatever to procure the very distin..,ui bed station ·which your confidence & kindne s cau ed you to propo e aidin" me in the prccurement of. I shall, my dear sir, always remember the 9bligations under which your kindness and genero ity have made me so largely your debtor. and hope at some time t9 have the pleasure of partially returning them. _ I hope most sincerely that you may be enabled to reconcile your elf to remain in Texas until the storm is over. I know your aversion to participate in public matter when the excitement is as high a it is now but such a tate of affairs is a consequence in revolutions and your patrioti m will no doubt induce you to bear it for a time to a sist in conferring on unborn ages the many benefits which mu t accrue to the de cendents of the heroes of San Jacinto. hould there be Journal published in Texas pl ase haYe me a regu- lar file ent to Oxford.
