1836 May 14, T. J. RUSK TO A. WOLL, (BiEADQUARTERS ~IEX. ICAN ARMY IN 'rEXAS) 14 (REPLY) Sir Your communication 75 to me under date of [l\fay 12) has been received, and would have been earlier answered, but for other duties which devolved upon me. The principle cau e cf your being sent to Velasco, was the preservation of your life. For let me a sure you, such was the indignation of the people of Texas at your conduct, that you could not have passed with your life to the Iexican army; and whrncvcr you say that indignation wa improper or unju tifiable, I pledge myself to prove from the circumstances the contrary to you, and also to the world to whom you choo e to my astoni hment to appeal. It does seem to me that men who talk of honor, duty hu- manity, the sacred rights of man, and saeredne of character, ought not to make an appeal to the world at large, unless the system of Moral Philosophy had first been o changed a to justify the commis- sion of moral and legal murder. The cenes of La Bahia must be :vet fre h in your recollection, and it is matter of astonishment to me, that any one who talks of bis honor, ann attachment to the 1\fexican Army, should invoke the scrutiny of a world, and suppose for a moment tlrnt the world would ju tify a -cold blooded butchery and murder, of brave and honorable men, in direct violation of the most sacred Trenty. But you chose to appeal to the world. Be it so. I have no objP.ction to the Judge: bnt I confrs my vanity had ne,,er ex- tr.ndPcl be,·ona' a very small portion of it. Bnt if you suppose the wol'lcl will stop its more weight;\' affair., to take up and jlld!!c the case between two ai; obscure individuals a Gt>nrrall W'oll and mr~:elf. make the appeal as soon as yon choose. But recollect that the worlcl will 011c day know that a )fexiran General who came to onr r.amp, sent an ignorant, impudent [ ]7° ronnd to py 011t onr rondition hefore he had hern ten minnte.q in our encampment, in that !iamc day the world will know, that the same Grneral, in '"Printed In Brown, J.
