I have th~ honor to inform you, that I have succeeded in de em- barking my men, and have marched them up to the Ii sion of Re- fugio, a distanee o.f fifteen miles- I have not yet succeeded in get- ting Carts and Teams, to tran port our baggage &c-tho, I hope to ha·ve them tomorrow-or the next day- I have been daily expecting the arrival of the Liberty and convoy, with stores, men &o- having been informed by Capt Brown of tbe Invincible that they were to follow him in one or two days- I have made temporary appointments of Branch Pilots, fo [r] this port- and given into their hand , the pilot Boat, le.ft here b ythe Mexicans, and which I conceive to be public property-They are ordered to be at the Bar-and have been provided with th neces- sary provision &c-I take the liberty of suggestin the propriety of making them a rno[n]thly aJ.lowance for some few month , exclu ive of the u ual charaes on ves els-- For the reason that there i. not trade enough to pay them in four numths for the labour of one month- I recd. an express from Col. Johnson this day, under date 2d. Feby- He is at San Patricio, a di tanee o 50 miles, with only about 100 men- They are waiting my arrival. when we will take up the line of march for Rio Grande -I learn from Col. John- on, that Col. (fonzale has 240 men-and Capt Placadon 47- and· om other l\Iexican officer . ome considerable force-and all are in wait for my advance and stationed near Peubla-Also about 400 more ready to join u , on thi side Rio Grande- l here,vith _give you an extract, from Col. John on commnni- cation,33 refered to, in relation to the movement of the enimy; and what we may hope for, from thi quarter- -" By advice from 1\Ionterey of the 18th. ult- and frm.
