The Papers of Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar, Volume I

PAPER" OF 1Irn.,BE., 311 pelled me to do what I have done, or give up all. What I ,have <lone wa from the best of reasons and purest of motives. I have done it at my own personal hazard and afety. I have, knowingly and will- fully, set the match: I have raised the torrn: I have thrown my elf into the breach; and whatever the con eqnences might be to me, as an individual, I honestly own it to you. It i a acrifice I have willingly made at the shrine of the public good. I had previously endeavored to purge the hive; but the worms had so artfully webed themselves in, that nothing hort of fire and brimstone would drive them. I let BuoN.\P.\HTE L.,i.1.,u them have it abundantly; and uch a buzz you cannot ima,,ine. They arc ,like bees witl1out a legitimate kin"'. They, however, seem ,tQ have one, vain enough to suppose his lencth and spruce appearance would justify his induction to the chair. I t)1ink my elf that Jrn has vanity enough to prompt him to be a king; but believe he will find himself nothing but' a drone. They are tryin" to rally, bnt without proper co-operation, they can do no serious injury. l well knew it was not in my power to adjourn them, without their con ent, and at the same time, knew they could not break me: I was compelled to cripple, · and I have done it, and for which I am answerable to my peers, in convention. They have profered their charges, and I am ·-ready and willing to plead to them. Their conduct was criminal; and I could no longer stand it. They had every thing combined again t me, men, means and a damned corrupt council. I wa entirely alone; not a friend about me. I was compelled to take a broad tand, and bluff the whole. I expected to be mobed; but have not ,been yet. I hupe you will not let them succeed in the election. If you are J1ot cautious, they will succeed against you. Give my respects to major Ward; and 1 t me hear from you. I am, in haste your friend, as ever, HE 1 RY SMITH. ~o. 311 1836 Feb. 1, ,T. W. F~\1 1 TING, ,JR., [COPA~·o]. ORDER
