The officers and a number of the soldiers representing the troops came to me and said that if I desired it, they would attack the Anglo- .Americans and ifinish them in a night. Seeing so mueh disorder, I immediately began working to quiet them. I sueeeeded in persuading them all to unite for the purpose of repulsing the enemy at their front, who, I informed them, would probably march aaainst them as soon as they learned of their dissension. I told them that I wa~ only a single individual and that for my sake they should not abandon their safety and that of the people. By means of thii: and other pcr- uasions I succeeded in quieting them. The next day ·Toledo arrived, whereupon their desires were fulfilled. The Council called the officers together to give their vote for Toledo, which they did, and the President immediately sent me an official letter which read as follows: '' In a general council held today in "'hich all officers and the greater part of the people were present, Senor Don Jo e Alvares de Toledo was elected Commander-in-Chief of the Republican Army of the north. I communicate this to your Excellency in order that you as com- mander of this army up to the present time, may make it h11own to the tl'Oops of the garrison; also that you may make a formal delivery of the archives and other branches of government; and that you may place Toledo in possession of the government with the proper formali- / ties and requisites. l\Iay God keep your Excellency many years. n.
