. I send you a copy of a letter 49 received by me this morning from the Secretary of the Treasury. You will perceive that its tenor is such as to require from you a prompt explanation, in justice to the Government as well as to your own reputation; and until a full and satisfactory explanation be afforded, you will put the Chief Clerk of the Department in possession of all the Books and papers connected with your office.
