Dr Sr. Having lately perused your official message to the • citizens of T-exas, I feel a strong desire of visiting your republic principally for the purpose of ascerta[in]ing the public sentiment on the cause of education. I think that if an institution of learning, extensive in its character, were established in some favorable place ,i youir country, its beneficial effects •would soon be felt in every portion of the community. ·wm you Sir, be so kind as to send me your opinion on this subject & also replys to the following ques- tions. Is public opinion in favor of an institution that should be supported by the republic 1 If not, would one of a more private character meet with encouragement 1 What point would be most favorable for the location of an institution of the following kind. Viz, One comprising in its course all the branches usually taught in Preparatory Schools, a thorough classical & mathematical course, together with instruction in the scienc-es & Modern languages. To it should be joined some system of Agricultural & Mechanical exercise and instruction. Such an one as this would require some land & a number of bnildings. No one of the United States has such an institution of learning, whose end is to educate all classes of the State for their respective avocations. Cannot & will not Texas among the improvements she is ·advising, be the first to establish something of this kind? I can present you, when necessaTy with satisfactory testimonials as to scholarship, moral character & ability to manage an institution of learning. If this meet with a
