LAMAR, [HOUSTON] Department of War Dec. 23d. 1838 His Excellency Mirabeau B Lamar President of the Republic of Texas S'ir, Since I had the honor to address to your excellency some general views on the 18th. Inst. in relation to the adoption of measures for defence- reports have reached this Department of ag- gressions on the part of the Comanches of a most aggravated character, on their reception- I ordered that the Company of Capt. Howard should occupy a position near Gonzales, & that of Capt. Jorden be posted near San Antonio for the protection of the inhabitants of those districts. I have no doubt, from the character of the tribes of Com- anches, that their recent attacks upon the inhabitants will be followed up with renewed attempts & increased missery to the Settlers. I respectfully recommend that a sufficient force be immediately raised to anticipate & chastise them. It is believed that 450 men will be a sufficient force.
