I have not had the pleasure of a communication from you since 13 th J anY I am glad to see that families of a comfortable appear- ance are still mooving to your settlement-I must beg the favor of you to inform me how the Halls [are] going on; if they are settling down to habits of industry and exhibit an appearance of be[ing] able sometime to pay their debts. It will always give me pleasure to receive a communication from you and be informed of- the progress of your settlement. I shall inform you of the charac- ters of all those with whom I am acquainted who are mooving within your jurisdiction, or vicinity and shall take the liberty of making enquiry of you, frequently perhaps, for persons who have dis- npeared rather clandastinly-I feel a great interest in the settle- ment and prosperity of the province generally-any information you could give me with regard to the progress of the new govern- ment would be particularly gratifying. I think it my duty to address you as early as possible as the head magistrate and manager of the Colony informing you of my ar- rival in this river with my family with the intentions of becoming a settler if you should approve of the same have brought with me the most ample testimonial certificates of character etc .which will be presented as soon as I have the pleasure of seeing you which will be so soon as possible as I have many Grievences to inform you of which requires your advice and aid without which I am afraid I cannot get along and it will always afford me pleasure to be guided by [you]. our mutual worthy friend Dr. Sibly informed me of your friendly and beloved character to every honest upright man, in my well assorted cargoe I had a quantity of fine goods fit or more for Spanish people than Americans and in order to dispose of these goods the vessell wns cleared out for Rio Grande or els where in my name as owner and mnster but not knowing navigation I hired
