I have an oppertunity of writing you a few lines by an acquaintance of mine Mr Atter who will hand you this i have wrote you more fully on the subject by mail if ~:fr Atter should find you in orleans dont fail to write by him my object in writing to you is for you to write me and say what offer you will make me to come on and settle in your country write me which will be the shortest and the cheapest way of going and what it would cost me write me whether any of my acquaintances has gone to that country please to give me some idea of the country respecting the health of the place and the lattitude that it is in a word I would like to be there I think I could make a fortune there no more at presen a <lieu till I see you JA:i'\CES c. Lexington December 9 th 1821 Mr Stephen F Austin Dear sir after my compliments to you I take the liberty of writ.ing you a few lines to git you to give me a corect statement of the texes or that part of the Country that you have large posesions in the peeple in this part of the country have various oppinions respecting the inducement that is held out to mecanicks that would migrate to that part of the Country some say there is no compultion on your giving them any thing only what they will pay for your letter in the paper says there will be grants of land appro- priated to farmers and mecanicks it does not mention that it would be at your option whether you give any thing or not I know of mecanicks that would go if i was to go but as the paper states the[y] would not be there in time to make a crop next summer then they might be cut short of any thing this place is very dull no incourage-
