THE AUSTIN PAPERS
filipe de Austin, since which time and before I have many letters in which he exercised ownership over it and finally at New Orleans in 1835..:.._he did the same when I saw him in Dec of same year, and was recognized by the board of proprietors, Yet nominally as the representative of his Brother James B. Austin Through my agency which was constituted at the framing of the Instrument called the Constitution of the Board of proprietors, and never revoked while he lived As to the question of the lands deeded to James B Austin I cannot say on what tenure he so secured them only from common report But I know that ·titles were made to him of which he knew nothing untill explained to him as was the case of the Matagorda fourth interest

MY DEAR Sm The Papers will have informed you we could not make our way against the Ice in the Ohio-and of the indisposition of Genl Santa Anna- The transition from a warm Cabin to the open Air-had an immediate effect upon his lungs-and on reaching here he found medical ajd indispensable- Dr. Dudly thinks him better to day-and I trust we will proceed in a few days- I hope you all estimate Genl Bravos Proclamation as I do-a ..Bravado"-or if not exactly that-as a prevention to our attacking him this Winter;-a Winter Campaign for them is out of the question-and before Spring all will be arranged- tell the President-or write him- that the Mexicans will not this Winter at least give another Genl Huston an opportunity of conquering them- I have just seen Mrs Holly-and Capt Austins charming daughters and very much pleased with Aunt and Nieces- BARNARD E. BEE [Addressed:] Hon. S. F. Austin Velasco Texas Care of Mr Toby and Brother New Orleans
